If you see yourself identifying players with data or watching games to impact player recruitment. Then you need these four pillars.
Analysis is a key part of the modern game. You have to be able to understand and use data in your day to day role.
Scouting still is a core aspect of any role working in football recruitment regardless if it's live or video.
This is the key to developing your knowledge, growing your network and creating opportunities in football.
You can have all the technical knowledge in the world but without employability skills you won't land opportunities.
[A look into how I got here]
My background is in Sports Coaching.
I started to coach football aged 17, this progressed into doing a coaching degree at Leeds Beckett University.
I specialised down the analysis pathway during my degree and I had the opportunity to work in Leeds United’s academy and with Bradford City’s first team.
Following my degree I ended up working in the gambling industry as a football trader for 6+ years. Quite different from where I thought I’d end up.
The COVID lockdowns gave me more free time and I started to see people sharing their own analysis work online.
So I thought, I could do that myself.
When I got started I didn’t know anything. I couldn’t code, I had never heard of Tableau, and I didn’t know where people got their data or video games from.
Eventually have the help from the community, I was put on the right path and started to share my work online.
I got valuable feedback which enabled me to develop and improve.
This then lead to freelance opportunities with clubs, players and agents. Then onto part-time work alongside my then day job.
Now, I’m working full-time in football as a data analyst & scout.
Whether you’re an aspiring analyst or scout, struggling to make opportunities in the game, or seeking a career switch into football.
Every Monday morning, you’ll get 1 actionable tip to progress your journey in football.
